Macbooks to get multi-touch?

News

Rumors have been swirling around that Apple is working on a multi-touch Macbook. According to an unnamed informant, the upcoming Macbook revision will include a version of the multi-touch interface that made its public debut last Friday in the iPhone. The new laptops will reputedly  allow you to access the technology by way  of the mouse touch pad. Scrolling is already par for the course, but the revision is said to allow the same kind of finger-gesturing zoom and navigation found on Apple’s cell phone. This seems entirely plausible, but as always, we’ll have to wait, wait, wait it out until further notice.

    That will make me wait wait wait it out to see if I want to get one.

    @JJLO it could mean a not so far idea but rather the release of a multi-touch apple tablet?!? If they have their way in next few months we will see this materialize, laptops as fun as they are won’t gain much from multi-touch unless they convert to tablets.

    If the keyboard side of a laptop were replaced by another touchscreen, it would be an interesting device. The full keyboard would be virtual, of course, and could disappear when you didn’t need it around. Essentially this would be two tablets joined at the hinge. Quick, let me patent this thought.

    @richard too late someone already does either hold the patent or the idea of such. I don’t remember where or who but someone already did what you said.

    See here is where that old tech touch pad stuff comes in useful. This is something that I would buy.

    Oh well. It’s not the first time someone has thought of a brilliant idea of mine before me. Easy come, easy go.

    I don’t see much of a benefit to have a multi touch screen on a regular laptop. You’d have to reach over the keyboard to interact with the screen?

    I’m a Tablet PC user, have been for years. It would definately have to be a tablet design that swivels the screen to lie flat then you could multi touch away.

    But then, without other features already established in Windows Tablet PC edition and now Vista, having a multi touch screen just to zoom in and out of the web and photos would really be just a gimmick.

    It would have to be more functional (ala digital ink) and then Apple would be following Microsoft which would leave the Apple fanboy base scurrying to claim how Apple invented the whole tablet pc concept back in the Stone Age and Microsoft stole it.

    AND Steve Jobs has repeatedly gone on record saying he thinks the whole tablet pc concept is idiotic and worthless. Something along the lines of who wants to use touch to interact with a device? if I remember correctly.

    So, since he clearly missed his own memo and released a device that operates solely on touch, maybe he’s changing his tune now and there will be a Mac Tablet after all.

    @Aaron Walker

    It’s not a multi-touch screen…it’s a multi-touch touchpad.
