While this is unlikely to send HD-DVD to the Laser Disc bin, those that have been cheering for HD-DVD to win the NexGen format game are about to be dealt a huge setback. Blockbuster, who has been testing both formats in stores to determine the viability of carrying one or the other, is expected to announce on today, that Blu-Ray will now be the exclusive NexGen product in the majority of its stores. Only 250 of the test stores will continue to carry HD-DVD for rent, as consumer preference showed a whopping 70% of HD titles were of the Blu-Ray variety. Blockbuster.com will also continue to carry HD-DVD, for those that rent their flicks online. Interesting to note: Consumers apparently cared more about the exclusive title differences, rather than price, in their decision making process.
